Why are hashtags with special characters broken?

The hashtags are only broken when you are logged in to twitter and you use the webfrontend to look at your own timeline. For other users and for twitter search function the hashtags does working and looks ok! Also other clients like "echofon" can handle the special chars and are displaying the hashtags correct.
This is a problem with twitter not with the AutoTweet extension. You can test this: Login to the twitter web interface and enter a message with special chars (i. e. german "Umlaut"). Now you see the same behavior.
